Japandi – an inspiring combination of styles

Japandi – the origin of the style

Japandi is a new direction in interior design that combines 2 styles – Scandinavian and Japanese. The Scandinavian severity has been replaced with Japanese harmony, thanks to which the rooms have become more livable. The name of this style is a combination of the words „japan” meaning Japanese and „andi”, which is the ending of „skandi”.

Characteristics of the style
According to the Japanese principle of moderation, in Japandi-style interiors we find only those elements that are essential to our daily lives. The entire arrangement is based on light and muted colors that harmonize with nature. The emphasis is on the purity of form and natural materials. We forgo unnecessary decorations and focus on functionality. Low minimalist furniture is made from wood, bamboo, or rattan. The primary role is played by decorative natural wood cladding. What brings life to these subdued arrangements are green plants and accents of black. There is no pattern or too invasive colors and contrasting colors.

What door?
The elegant, functional solutions that combine minimalism and functionality are perfectly suited to the Japandi style. Among these we can include the woodless Visio door system from Gustavson. The use of the system allows for the emphasis of minimalism in the interior and the effect of clean walls – smooth surfaces around the door, a smooth and harmonious transition between the planes. If it weren’t for the hinge and the delicate gap, the doors with the hidden frame could be completely invisible from the side facing the wall. They could then be covered with the same color as the room or placed on wallpaper, panels, or a wall panel – this effectively conceals them within the interior. The final effect is extremely interesting.

In turn, the Stanlux SLX system for internal transition doors features a strong accent characteristic of the Japandi style – a mask for the running rail. In black, this creates a vibrant design and perfectly complements the discussed style. The functionality of this solution also remains significant. The large light in the passage allows us to move freely through the traffic lanes and makes it easy to separate rooms in places where there is no space for swing doors to be used.

In the Japandi style, decorative cladding made of natural wood plays a central role. In addition to furniture, it can also be used for doors, and by installing a Stark or Estima cabinet from Gustavson, you can make the most of the space.

Thanks to the folding of the door leaf in a special pocket hidden in the wall, the opening of the passage is larger, which makes it easy for even people using wheelchairs to use the entrance. Gustavson’s cabinets are the ideal solution where a swing door cannot be used or in narrow passages where many people use them. When opening a traditional 90° angle door, we lose about 1 m², while opening it to 180° we lose up to 2 m². Imagine a pantry or a dressing room in the bedroom separated in a small kitchen. An impressive and ergonomic solution made possible by the use of cabinets.
The combination of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian love for cozy interiors is not only fashionable, but above all a functional, comfortable, and beautiful combination. That’s why it’s worth taking inspiration from it and applying it to your interiors.
